San Francisco Botanical Garden Travel Trips and Tours
Field Trip to Santa Lucia Mountains and Monterey Peninsula (241-212)

Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20

The Monterey Peninsula and Santa Lucia Mountains are among the most beautiful coastal areas in the world. This region is also home to varied plant communities, a wide array of rare conifers including Monterey cypress, Monterey pine, and Santa Lucia fir, and a host of beautiful spring wildflowers. We'll venture into the remote mountains of the Santa Lucias on Saturday with a hike up rugged Cone Peak to see sugar pines, Santa Lucia firs, and Coulter pines studded with flowering shrubs and wildflowers. We'll also visit beautiful Pt. Lobos, where sea cliffs, sculpted pines and cypresses, and rock gardens of bluff plants are set off by sparkling waters. We'll finish by looking at the success of dune restoration in the town of Marina.

ITINERARY
Friday evening, May 18. Drive down to Monterey for overnight in a motel.

Saturday, May 19. Early departure to drive down the Big Sur coast to Lucia and up the Nacimiento-Ferguson Road to Cone Peak Road. We'll car caravan once we're on this road all the way to the trailhead to Cone Peak. We'll then make a 4-mile hike to the top of Cone Peak for
sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Drive back to the Monterey area for dinner and overnight in the same motel.
