Seneca Klassen
Seneca Klassen is the Managing Partner and founder of Kokoleka O’Ka Aina, LLC, a Hawaii partnership dedicated to growing cacao and making chocolate on Oahu. Born and raised on the Monterey Peninsula in California, Seneca graduated from the York School in 1987, and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California at San Diego in 1991. Throughout the 1990s, he was involved in music and writing projects for companies as diverse as Timberland, WebMD and Chow.com. As the 1990s came to a close, Seneca found himself increasingly drawn to an interest in fine foods, and began experimenting and collaborating with friends in the brewing and winemaking industries. As an extension of these adventures into fermented foods, he began trying to make chocolate from the bean in early 2000 for the first time, and over the next couple of years realized the immense possibilities and nuances of this complex and delightful food.
