Janet Moyer

As the founder and president of award-winning Janet Moyer Landscaping (JML), Janet serves as the creator and designer of more than 400 unique and customized urban gardens in and around San Francisco. Her early years of visiting her grandparents’ farm near a small town in Michigan, and later years of gardening in her own yards, helped Janet realize that the most rewarding career would be to do what she loves most. In 1990, she started Janet Moyer Landscaping.

In addition to specializing in residential design, Janet has also been involved with designing spaces for community gardens, wineries, large residential sites, condominium associations, and botanical gardens.

To complement her extensive experience, Janet has continued studying the art and science of landscaping. She has studied at the Community College of San Francisco Environmental Horticulture Department, San Francisco Professional Gardeners’ Association and California Landscape Contractors’ Association industry seminars, and continuing education courses.

For inspiration in her work, Janet has traveled to over 40 countries to tour and observe botanical gardens, resorts, public gardens and historical sites, naturally occurring flora, and special private gardens.

Prior to starting her landscape business, she focused her creative energies on developing her skills in black and white photography, with landscapes and portraits as her specialties. Many principles, techniques and observations that she learned in photographing landscapes are now applied to her landscape designs.

When asked what makes a garden or landscape a “Janet Moyer landscape,” she emphasizes the importance of its being well thought out from every aspect and applying a plant palette that is tested to thrive despite the challenges of weather and other environmental influences. This complements her philosophy about landscaping and gardening: “It has to be beautiful and low maintenance.”
