Designing with Palms Tour and Talk by Jason Dewees (263-08082018)

Wednesday, August 8, 6:00PM-8:00PM

Did you know San Francisco Botanical Garden is home to an exceptional and recognized collection of high-altitude and cool-growing palms? Join us for a walk in the garden followed by a slide lecture by longtime Garden volunteer Jason Dewees, author of Designing with Palms (Timber Press, 2018).

Five years in the making, Jason Dewees' beautiful new book offers a wealth of design inspiration and ideas. It is exquisitely illustrated with photographs by Caitlin Atkinson and features gardens in the Bay Area (including the SF Botanical Garden), Hawai`i, South Florida, Southern California, South Carolina, and Palm Springs. Jason will share lessons from some of the best designers working with palms in the United States and provide information about the palm family to enable designers and gardeners to embrace the power of palms in landscape design.

Copies of Designing with Palms will be available for sale and signing. RSVP at bkuhl@sfbg.org.

Jason Dewees is a horticulturist and palm expert at Flora Grubb Gardens in San Francisco. He has consulted on palm collections of the Conservatory of Flowers, UC Botanical Garden, the Presidio National Park and the San Francisco Botanical Garden. He has trained volunteers and docents on the palm family, grown thousands of palms from seed, planted palms in gardens, consulted with gardeners, landscape architects and designers on using palms in the landscape, and lectured on palms. Jason joined the Northern California Chapter of the International Palm Society as their youngest member in 1986 and offers a very local point of view on palms in the Bay Area.
