Green Living: Ecology and Conservation in the Home Garden (212-3000)

Care of the Earth starts at home.  Join Dr. Don Mahoney of the San Francisco Botanical Garden and Tom Bressan of the Urban Farmer Store, the Bay Area’s top irrigation specialists, as they share changes you can make to your home garden that will reduce your ecological footprint.  This lecture includes:  more efficient ways to use energy resources in the garden landscape, choosing the right plants for the right place, hands-on demonstrations and lots of great information.  Learn how rainwater harvesting, efficient irrigation, plant selection, proper soil amendments and mulch can improve the health of the landscape while lowering your water bills.

Dr. Mahoney will discuss ecology and conservation in the Bay Area home gardens, Topics will include:

  • Creating a healthy ecosystem to nurture beneficial insects and birds
  • Planting with perennials to attract pollinators
  • Integrating vegetables and fruits into the landscape
  • Adding a matrix of natives throughout the garden
Mr. Bressan will stress:
  • slow even application of water
  • proper zoning of plants to water,
  • proper scheduling of irrigation.
  • water reuse--rainwater collection
  • and a few moments on LED- lighting, which is 75% more efficient and other recycled products that can be used.
