with Brent Bucknum & Kerby Olsen of hyphae design laboratory
With a particular focus on greywater systems, the workshop will take an integrated perspective, to addressing and evaluating the many innovative solutions to onsite water management. From their experience designing, permitting and installing systems throughout the Bay Area, Brent and Kerby will address the comprehensive range of greywater options from low-tech DIY solutions, to “off-the-shelf” packaged systems, high-tech automated treatment systems, and the pros and cons of each. They will walk the workshop attendants through a variety of real life bay area case studies to explain the different design and construction processes for a greywater system, from site assessment, to water use calculations, designing for retrofits vs. new construction, filtration options, irrigation/distribution systems, permitting, construction and maintenance.
Founded in 2008, the Hyphae Design Lab, is as an ecological engineering firm, based in the Lower Bottoms, West Oakland’s former wetlands. They pride themselves on pushing the envelop to develop highly innovative biologically focused greywater and rainwater systems, but also to work diligently to design and engineer permitted greywater and rainwater systems, which includes the frustrating, but rewarding, collaborative process with building departments and environmental health officials. We have successfully permitted some of the “first” greywater or rainwater systems in Alameda, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties. We are currently working to permit systems in, Marin, Los Angeles, Mendocino and San Diego Counties.
