Lunar New Year Flower Market (251-112) A San Francisco Tradition |
|||||||||||
Sat, Feb 13, 10:00am--2:00pm The Year of the TigerTo celebrate the Year of the Tiger, the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society will host its 11th Annual Lunar New Year Flower Market February 13 in the County Fair Building's spacious gallery at 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way.
The only event of its kind, its a fun-packed day for the whole family celebrating the Lunar New Year and exploring the City’s oasis-- the San Francisco Botanical Garden packed with more than 7500 varieties of spectacular plants from around the world thriving on 55 acres in the heart of Golden Gate Park. Nature gets involved too! Asian magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons can be at their peek bloom in mid-February. There will be docent-led tours of the Garden to see these awe-inspiring flowers. The tiger is the third animal in the twelve animal cycle of the Chinese New Year. People born in the Year Of The Tiger (1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010) are characterized as powerful, emotional, aggressive and sincere, but can be restless, reckless and impatient. The Market is not only a plant sale, however. Attendees can browse booths of beautiful handcrafted items, sample the delicious foods for sale, see a performance by the West Coast Lion Dance Troupe, and take a docent-guided tour of the San Francisco Botanical Garden. Children will also enjoy fan painting and origami activity stations, as well as special Asian-themed story readings in the Helen Crocker Russell Library. A wonderful alternative to the crowded bustle of the downtown New Year celebrations, the Market has gained popularity as a place for all San Franciscans to celebrate an important tradition. "This is the time of year for the community and the neighbors of the SFBG to come together to celebrate with great hopes for the coming year," says Ernie Ng, event co-organizer and SFBGS Docent. Admission to the Flower Market is free and the event is open to the public. |
