With GLENN KEATOR AND TELLUR FENNER:
a blending of botanical, ecological, ethnobotanical, and herbal plant knowledge.
Among the world's most diverse and successful plant families is the sunflower or daisy family, Asteraceae. Its members number around 20,000 species worldwide, and they dominate many habitats by sheer numbers and kinds. Although it's easy to recognize the family, sorting out the different kinds is difficult since--to most eyes--the flower design looks similar from kind to kind. But to the botanist and herbalist, every group has its own distinctive signature traits and uses, which can be learned by careful observation. The goal of our program is to share the secrets to identifying the many native members of this family in order to make accurate use of them in healing and food. The course will cover one session indoors to observe traits under the microscope with a walk in a botanic garden in the afternoon, and one field session in a local destination to observe how the plants grow, how they're adapted to their environment, and how they are used to treat a variety of common ailments.
