A Special SFBGS Mini-Seminar: Surviving the Drought (212-1300)

Sat, Jul 18, 9:00am--1:30pm

Part One: Drought Tolerant Natives and Meditterranean Shrubs
with Don Mahoney, Ph.D.
9:00am - 11:00am

Gardeners are tightening their belts just like everybody else, cutting back, watching expenditures, and saving water. Choosing a garden of drought-tolerant native and Mediterranean plants can help conserve time, money, and water, without sacrificing beauty. Join an expert on the subject, SFBGS Curator Dr. Don Mahoney, for a workshop on selecting and caring for hardy plants. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced native gardener, Don will share valuable insight into the wide spectrum of plants from the world's arid regions and explain how they can flourish in the Bay Area. Plants will be available for sale!

Part Two: Water-Thrifty Techniques
with Janet Moyer and Michael Hofman
11am-1:30pm

Join Janet Moyer and CLCA Certified Water Manager Michael Hofman, co-owners of sustainably focused Janet Moyer Landscaping, for a discussion on keeping your garden healthy using as little water as possible. Learn about new "smart" water management systems, using "water thrifty" plants, applying good cultural practices and using drip irrigation to avoid over-watering.
