San Francisco Botanical Garden Travel Trips and Tours
Wildflowers in the Wild Country of the Yolla Bolly Mountains (241-235)

Friday, June 20 through Monday, June 23

This southward extension of the Yolla Bolly Mountains has dramatic buttes, deep canyons, and small lakes. The area combines floristic elements of the North Coast Ranges--including extensive Garry oak forests--with Sierran meadows and conifers. It's also home to scree slopes with rare bulbs and matted alpines, and dashing brooks with lilies, bleeding heart, and dogwood. Highlights include firecracker brodiaea, mariposa tulips, fawn and glacier lilies, several fritillarias, bleeding heart, and much more.

ITINERARY:

Friday, June 20: Drive up Hwy. 101 north of Willits, and just before Leggett look for turnoff to Dos Rios-Covelo. Continue on this road to the northeast into Covelo, and just north of town, look for the motel on the left hand side of the road. We'll make several stops as we make a transect up into the mountains from here.

Saturday, June 21: Climb Anthony Peak in the morning. This climb will be slow, in order to see the many plants of forest, meadow, and scree. Afternoon drive to Plaskett Meadows for the beautiful meadow flowers there.

Sunday, June 22: Morning drive to serpentine barrens near Black Butte. If time allows later, we'll drive to Lily Lake, before heading down Mendocino Pass.

Monday, June 23: We'll leave from Covelo (meet at the motel) and have a choice of driving home the way we came in or driving over Mendocino Pass for a route home through the Central Valley.

RECOMMENDED ACCOMMODATIONS: You can camp at Eel River campground at the confluence of the Eel and Black Butte rivers the first night and higher at Wells Cabin campground near Anthony Peak the second, or stay in Covelo at the Wagon Wheel Motel (707) 983-6717.

FOOD: The Round Valley Inn (and other restaurants) in Covelo serve good meals. Plan to pack lunches for the field.

BRING: Be sure to carry plenty of water, as water is seldom available at our campground, and the weather can be hot. Also include field notebook, hand lens, sturdy walking shoes, hat, sunscreen, and bug juice. Layered clothing is best; nights can be chilly; days often very hot. I'll provide plant lists for everyone when we meet.

ROUTE: Allow four to five hours from the immediate Bay Area. Follow Hwy 101 north past Willits to the tiny burg of Longvale. Turn northeast (right) onto Hwy 162, which takes you into Covelo. It's about an hour from this intersection to Covelo because of the windy road. Proceed into Covelo to the motel.

MEETING PLACE AND TIME: We'll meet at the Wagon Wheel Motel on the main road at 2 pm sharp. You should have already eaten lunch before hand. From there, we'll car caravan up canyon, with possibly a side trip to Etsel Ridge.

TRANSPORTATION: Carpooling suggested
