Glimpses of Early Autumn in a Medley of Garden Gems (246-201)

Thursday, October 5, 2006

Join Barbara and John Hopper, for a memorable day visiting a beautiful selection of awarded designer gardens. On this tour we will visit the gardens of noted designers Brandon Tyson & Penney Magrane Associates.
Each garden is filled with exciting new ideas
The tour includes: transportation, morning and afternoon refreshments and gourmet box luncheon.
This morning finds us in the hills above Sausalito where we will visit two beautiful gardens not visited before.
Our tour begins with Brandon Tyson, acclaimed by the N.Y. Times as one of Northern California's most sought-after designers.
Tyson continues what has become a San Francisco Botanical Garden tradition by previewing a work-in-progress to gardeners in the know. While we enjoy some morning refreshments, well catch a behind-the scenes glimpse into the design process where he has created another signature garden in the hills above Sausalito.

Further along in Sausalito, we visit a spectacular garden noted for its distinctive design and use of special plant materials.

Traveling northward to the wine country of Sonoma, we will enjoy lunch in a beautiful garden setting at the home of designer Penney Magrane, being re-visited by popular demand. This upper ranch style property has been transformed into a garden lovers delight, including glorious rose alee, raised vegetable beds, and a pleached curved olive hedge .

Many beautiful oak-studded canyons are found in the Sonoma area. And it is here that we find urban sophistication in a rural Balinese jewel box. Verdant and lush garden rooms unfold beneath the striking Live Oaks on this three-quarters of an acre compound. Crushed granite paths take you from the tear drop parrotia lined terrace that features a Bryan Tedrick metal sculpture through the rose garden and raised cortene steel vegetable beds. Stone walls sculpt the setting to the Dining Terrace, Pool Terrace and Spa Deck. The Outdoor kitchen is a chef's dream.

Further along in Jack London's Valley of the Moon, our next visit will be to a residence and garden high in the hills above Sonoma Valley. The owners, Mr. And Mrs. Arrowood fell in love with the property for the views as well as the vineyard potential. Involved since the beginning, Magrane Associates has seen the project from bare land to a completed project and worked with the design and construction team to bring the client's dream to reality. The house, sited amongst the oaks of the property provides the setting as well as the challenge of the project. The project includes a guest house, pool and patanque court in a casual woodland setting and wonderful use of native plants. As our day comes to a close, we will enjoy a sip of fine wine in this picturesque woodland setting with panoramic views of the valleys and coastal ranges.
